A fake copy of WhatsApp was downloaded from Google Play over a million times

More than a million Android users downloaded a clone of the WhatsApp messenger from the Google Play store before Google reacted to the situation. The application had the WhatsApp logo and was called “Update WhatsApp Messenger”. Many decided that this service update, as the developer’s name also coincided with the official one. To do this, scammers used a “white space” in Unicode.

Users were lucky that the fake application only showed advertisements of other programs and services. Obviously, its developers wanted to make money on this. Only after the software downloaded more than a million users and Reddit received a huge amount of messages that it is a fake, the search giant removed the program from Google Play and blocked the developer.

Security specialists say that this happens all the time. The store regularly appears counterfeit versions of Facebook and other popular applications. By the way, one of the clones of Facebook downloaded more than 10 million times.
