The Windows Central portal interviewed Executive Producer Sea of Thieves Joe Neate and lead designer Ted Timmins to discuss future plans, the Xbox Game Pass, the purchase of ship animals and in-game events.
According to Joe, in spite of the fact that Sea of Thieves is distributed in two ways – as a separate purchase and by subscription to the Xbox Game Pass, – the Rare studio will still benefit. After all, the latter option will allow more users to join the service – this is also one of the developers’ goals, given that they are part of the Xbox platform.
Rare also plans to release the first major update for Sea of Thieves about three months after the release. The developer will add new types of tasks and additional elements of the game process on board the ship. Fishing, according to Joe Nita, would fit perfectly into this. He also mentioned a new trading company that could give new assignments with rare exclusive awards.
But Sea of Thieves has a place for micropayments. At launch, users will focus on the gameplay and explore the virtual world, and then the studio will ask the pirates to spend extra money for the sake of “buns.” They will not affect the gameplay, and people will clearly know what they are getting – no chests with random rewards. For an additional fee you can buy the following items: emotions, clothes, potions with cosmetic effects and ship animals.
With the latter you can interact, for example, pick up a monkey or a cat; another player can try to escape with them into the sea, but he will not be able to – the pets will immediately return back. The animal will bring a lot of joy to the team, and this will be the main reason for players to spend extra money – who does not want a cute kitty or a monkey with a funny hat? Joe Neath also plans to give the opportunity to shoot pets from guns, while the cat will always land solely on the paws. Another developer mentioned a certain “fun potion”, which will turn your character into an old man. All items purchased separately for real money will only entertain players. However, Rare does not plan any seasonal subscriptions or paid DLC sets – all updates will be delivered free of charge, as the studio does not want to share the community.
Since the launch of Sea of Thieves, the developers will arrange temporary events. For example, there will be a special character in the tavern for one weekend, which will give a limited time task and an exclusive reward for their implementation. There will also be things that will tell more about the mythology of Sea of Thieves.
New content in the Sea of Thieves will appear constantly, the developers even have the ability to release it daily. Updates will contain new elements of appearance and gameplay, as well as minor fixes. In addition, Joe Neath said that the project will have a white flag for the announcement of surrender and other signs. Updates will be available on readiness, and their release will be accompanied by announcements in social networks and (probably not always) small commercials. The studio sets an example of ARK: Survival Evolved, in which new elements appear extremely quickly.
“Tattoos, circles, scars,” said design manager Ted Timmins. – there are many things that we can change in the world. ” For example, players, returning to a place where yesterday was fairly calm, will encounter much more sharks or storms. Developers can even raise the water level. “We can do really cool things. Once, perhaps, all the tasks will lead to a jungle, and we will call it “wild environment” as a one-time and one-day event. But users who will play on this day, will experience completely new impressions “, – continued Timmins. According to him, Rare is planning both daily and weekly events. Planned and significant events that will take place every 6 or 8 weeks.
The premiere of Sea of Thieves will take place on March 20, 2018 on the Xbox One and PC (Windows 10).
