On May 8, in Mountain View, Google opened its annual I / O 2018 developer conference. After a brief keynote speech that the technology company was approaching the development of its products with a “deep sense of responsibility,” executive director Sandar Pichai gave the floor to others speakers, who told about the new solutions of the search giant.

Google says that the basis for its next operating system, known so far under the name Android P, is the principle of artificial intelligence as the core platform. Several innovations were listed, which we will see on the market, probably in the autumn of this year.
In Android P, three soft buttons at the bottom of the operating system will be replaced with a single “Home” button. The upward swing will also include opening the shortcuts of the five applications that the operating system considers the most popular user at the moment. The second swipe up can open all applications running on the phone. A side-waving from the “Home” button will allow you to view all running applications.
In Android P there will be a new Shush mode, in which the OS will turn off all notifications, beeps and sounds so that users cannot be distracted at meetings and in other cases – just turn the phone over. Calls from important people (for example, family members) will continue to pass.
Wind down (Rest)
This new mode will translate the phone’s screen into grayscale after a certain time of day: according to Google, this helps users to stop using the phone in bed. But you can always disable this function if you do not feel like sleeping.
Set the phone aside
The application toolbar on Android will show the user how often he uses certain applications. Previously, only the amount of energy consumed by certain programs was reported. You can also configure applications to remind you of the need for breaks when using a particular software.
Advanced turn control
Now the user can control when the phone changes the screen orientation: instead of just turning on or off the rotation lock, when the phone starts, the operating system will show a small icon, allowing the user to disable the rotation lock in a particular application, rather than the function as a whole.
Improved battery management
Android P has traditionally received optimizations for managing power consumption: the OS understands which applications are used more often, and will try to expend the battery only on them. Google said that internal tests showed a 30 percent reduction in the number of processor out of power-saving mode in the beta tests of Android P. Google also added adaptive screen brightness settings: Android will learn which brightness is optimal for the user in different conditions.
Android will better understand how users use their phone over time. If a person always calls his sister in the evening or, perhaps, goes for a run after work, the OS will offer these actions right on the start screen. Or, when headphones are connected, Android will offer to resume listening to the album, which was last launched on Spotify. The Google search bar now also supports deep links to applications. For example, if you search for the movie “Avengers: War of Infinity”, the system will offer to book tickets for Fandango service or watch a trailer on YouTube directly in the search results. Support is also provided for finding information from third-party compatible services and applications.
Machine learning tools such as structuring images, recognizing text, speech and individuals, as well as other AI tools created in Google, will now be available to third-party developers to make their applications more intelligent. For this is the set of software tools Google ML Kit.
Beta version of Android P
Google has already launched a beta version of its next operating system. It will be available for select Google devices, including Pixel 2, as well as for some flagship smartphones, including the Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus , Oppo R15 Pro , Vivo X21, OnePlus 6 and Essential PH-1. Google does not say when Android P will be ready to launch, but if you rely on the experience of the past, it will happen in the fall.
Even more natural conversations with the voice assistant Google Assistant are supported. The user no longer needs to constantly say “Hey, Google” to contact the digital assistant. Once the user has brought the attention of the AI to the first query, you can ask him the following commands. For example, now such a “conversation” is possible:
– Hey, Google, turn on the Warriors game.
“Ah, and can you turn off the light?”
And Google will listen and execute commands
Multiple requests simultaneously
Now the user can immediately combine questions and commands, and Assistant will understand such complex queries. On stage, the Google representative asked: “Who was the governor of California when Kevin Durant was drafted and who chose him?” The AI realized without any problems that these were all individual issues, and replied that Arnold Schwarzenegger was the governor in 2007 and that the Seattle Supersonics team chose Durant basketball player this year.
Be correct, please
Following the main competitor in the virtual assistant market, Google announced that it has created a feature that supports polite behavior of children when they ask assistants. When people say “please” when they ask for something from the assistant, he will begin his answer with something like: “Thank you for a pleasant question.”
Google created a new method of modulating the voice in its assistant called Wavenet. In addition, there are six more voices, including one, imitating the intonations of singer John Legend.
Other updates to the helper
Google works with Starbucks, Dunkin ‘Donuts, Dominos and other companies in which it will be possible to make orders through an assistant. Users will also be able to share their arrival time when they navigate using Google Maps. There will be updates for the digital assistant in other formats, for example, in the upcoming touch screen displays from Lenovo, JBL and other companies that have Google Assistant built in, as well as on cars that support the Google Auto platform.
Last updates Lens
Google Lens, the technology of computer vision, built into Google Camera, can now scan the world in real time. It’s enough to direct the phone around you, and the system will try to find out what the person looks at, whether the name of the book, the height of the building or the breed of the dog, you can also find a product that is identical or similar to the one you like. All these functions will be available this year.
Google also introduced the third version of its processors Tensor Processing Unit for faster calculations. According to Mr. Picha, the new version is eight times more powerful than the one presented last year, and the corresponding Google servers for the first time demanded liquid cooling.
Google previously introduced a new digital assistant function called Duplex – it caused genuine enthusiasm for the public. In the future, users will be able to ask the assistant to arrange an appointment or make a booking, and the system will make a call and talk with the relevant company to place the order.
This is nuts: A new feature in Assistant, called Google Duplex, lets users ask Assistant to book appointments for them and it calls real humans to book it for them

Sandar Pichai demonstrated the conversations that took place between the digital assistant and real people. On the stage Google Assistant called the hairdresser to order a haircut, and also found out if you need a reservation in the restaurant. Although these conversations were relatively simple, in both cases they persuaded people that they were talking to another person. The assistant even added interjections “aha” and “yeah” in his speech for greater plausibility.
Google does not provide a timeline for when Duplex will be available to users, but the demonstration on the stage was impressive and clearly showed in what direction the AI research is currently developing and at what stage are the company’s AI studies today.
Google Maps Updates
Augmented reality on maps
Using the camera phone, you can open Maps so that the application directs the user in the selected direction. A digital guide or arrows will indicate the path. Opening the camera on Maps also allows you to see information about institutions and events near the current location of the user.

. Google will present a new tab in the Maps, which will show the user what might be interesting to him, including new establishments opening in the region, and places that might like. All this will be compiled on the basis of previously left reviews, visited places and other activities. Updates from restaurants or other establishments that were previously visited will also be available on this tab.
If the user asks where to go to lunch with friends, he can now make a simple list of options in Google Maps to share with friends instead of copying a bunch of links. In response, friends will also be able to add their suggestions or vote for the position they liked.
These updates are expected in the summer.
Intelligent Compose Mail in Gmail
For many, dialing emails is too troublesome, but Google is going to make the task easier. Soon the company will release an auxiliary technology called “Smart Compose”, which will be able to offer whole ready-made offers for users. When the latter starts entering general phrases or fragments of information about themselves, Gmail will suggest what to enter based on Google’s knowledge of it (for example, address, phone, user behavior analysis, etc.).
In fact, it’s about developing the functionality of the “smart answer” that Google presented to Gmail users last month along with the updated interface – it automatically offered short answers to emails. The new feature should be available within a few weeks to individual Gmail users and in the next few months – professional users of G Suite.
Google Photos updates
Now Google Photos automatically recognizes friends of users in photos and offers to share pictures with them. Google also introduced new effects, including the ability to paint old black and white photographs, blur the background or give it a different shade. Users can also turn photos of documents into PDF files, which is intended to replace the complex procedure of scanning and recognition. Google launched a partner program and API, which will use the powerful capabilities of Google Photos in third-party applications and services.
Google gave a little time on the stage of one of the affiliated companies Alphabet, – Waymo. The general director of the company John Krafchik (John Krafcik) made a statement that this year Waymo will launch a full-scale service for calling autopilot vehicles. First the service will be deployed in Phoenix (Arizona), which was one of the cities where Waymo tested its cars in recent years. It was also reported that the quality of recognition of pedestrians Google’s robotic vehicles in recent months has been improved 100 times.
Updating Google News
Google reworked its news application around the AI. It will constantly show the user five best stories, which, in his opinion, will be interesting. The application constantly scans the network in search of local events and search history to find out what a person really wants to know. This will make the app less traditional news sources, including YouTube and podcasts.
Google News will also show the context of the news, which is called “full coverage,” including headlines, tweets and other stories – all this will provide additional details, as well as the chronology of the event in question. Users will be able to subscribe to paid publications via Google News. Instead of filling out various forms on news sites and entering credit card information, it will be possible to use a credit card connected to Google. The updated application has already begun to be deployed in 127 countries.
By the way, for those who did not watch the two-hour opening of Google I / O, the company made a small 10-minute video clip:
