Full review HP Spectre Folio: high-tech with leather trim

HP Spectre Folio stands out among similar devices made of metal and plastic, besides it is pleasant to the touch. All because his body is trimmed with genuine leather. The solution is at least unusual. And as far as the laptop is good at work and who can come in handy, we find out in the review.

Leather and metal, classic and high-tech

The tactile sensations from the HP Spectre Folio suggest an expensive car’s dashboard. Thanks to the finish of genuine leather, the laptop is not slippery at all and it is pleasant to take it in hand. Workmanship at the height: the line is flat, and the material itself is thick enough to withstand all the burdens of everyday use.

Under the finish frame is hidden from the metal – it increases the overall dimensions and thickness of the device, but a positive effect on its strength. Yes, and there is no need to spend money on a protective case: although it is not worth dropping such equipment, there is still additional protection.

Constant touching the leather surface does not cause discomfort. At room temperature, the hands do not sweat and do not slip – on the contrary, the hunt once again run your fingers along the trimmed edge.

HP Spectre Folio was also a transformer. The screen rotates 180 Β°, and the keyboard acts as a stand. Alternatively, you can flip the display and close the keyboard unit with it – you’ll get a regular tablet, only a large one and in a leather β€œcover”.

Is it a pleasure to work?

The screen with a diagonal of 13.3 “received a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. For such dimensions, FullHD is enough for the eyes. The picture pleases with clarity, good viewing angles and rich color rendition. And most importantly, you can control the image literally manually, because the display is also touch-sensitive.

The device is equipped with a stylus. For a professional designer, his capabilities and sensitivity may not be enough, but editing documents and notes makes it easier. Highlight words directly on the screen, make sketches and save notes in a notebook with a stylus very convenient.

The transformation mechanism makes using HP Spectre Folio easy and enjoyable. To create a note or sketch, simply rotate the screen and use the stylus. And watching a movie or a couple of videos on YouTube is easy in tablet orientation. You get used to it quickly: after that, for an ordinary laptop, there will always be something missing.

The keys have a soft stroke and clear pressing, problems with typing does not arise. What is discouraging is that the cursor buttons have different sizes. The left and right arrows are large, and the up and down arrows are miniature and close. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust to them.

Sound quality does not give grounds for criticism – of course, by the standards of laptops. The volume reserve is sufficient, the speakers do not wheeze, the bass is palpable. This is enough for home watching movies without headphones or portable speakers.

Evaluate performance

The review was modified HP Spectre Folio 13-ak0007ur. It is based on the eighth generation Intel Core i5-8200Y processor. It works in tandem with 8 GB of RAM. The integrated graphics core Intel UHD Graphics 615 is responsible for the graphics. This bundle is sufficient for decent speed in everyday tasks. Iron copes with everything you need, including editing images in Photoshop.

Integrated graphics limit gaming capabilities, but this is expected. HP Spectre Folio is designed primarily for business tasks, and not the passage of fashionable shooters. But this does not mean that with him it is impossible to pass the time for a casual toy or a toy that came out several years ago. For example, World of Tanks and Stardew Valley run without problems and with a comfortable frame rate. True, even in simple entertainment the laptop heats up significantly. But passive cooling makes it absolutely quiet.

Test results

WORLD OF TANKS BLITZ 60 fps (at maximum settings)
LEFT 4 DEAD 2 60 fps
NEED FOR SPEED SHIFT 22 fps
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: WAR IN THE NORTH 32 fps (at minimum settings)
STARDEW VALLEY 60 fps

Autonomous work

Of course, the 19 hours declared by the manufacturer without a socket is a utopia for most users. This figure strongly depends on applications running on a laptop, set performance parameters and screen brightness. However, HP Spectre Folio is doing well: it works quietly for a day and a half, if you don’t load it with games, and do your usual activities, such as surfing the Internet or working with documents.

The HP Spectre Folio and movie marathoners will not be disappointed: the laptop easily withstood 4 films in a row at half screen brightness and without connecting to the mains. A quick charge helps to replenish power through the USB Type-C connector. You can charge the device by 50% in about 30 minutes, this is a good indicator.

HP Spectre Folio attracts an unusual design – this combination of leather with metal is pleasing to the eye. This business laptop makes a favorable impression not only in appearance but also in touch. Working with him comfortably thanks to the transformation mechanism and the stylus, autonomy is also not bad. Of course, the device is not designed for serious games, but it was not created for this. A good choice for a department manager, an enterprising businessman or an excellent student.
