Laptop Review Acer Swift 1 SF114-32 - Easy assistant on the road 4

Acer has always been relatively good in the notebook market, but the last couple of years have been particularly successful for it. This was achieved not only by constantly updating the model range and improving the quality in general, but also because the range of their portable computers is presented in all segments, from the budget, to the most expensive. In particular, the Swift line is built around the concept of a light and elegant case, and a filling that does not differ in special performance, but it has a high autonomy. On these laptops you will not be able to play modern games (a discrete video adapter is not provided here), but they successfully perform all the other trivial tasks. And most importantly, thanks to compactness, there is no desire to leave them at home. In this review, we look at the Acer Swift 1 model, built on the basis of the Intel Pentium N5000 processor with an integrated graphics core HD Graphics 605, equipped with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB solid-state drive.

In addition to the entertaining colors, a significant degree of charm Acer Swift 1 are its dimensions. The laptop has a thickness of slightly less than 15 mm, length and width of 323×228 mm. At the same time, it remains strong enough to bend, since the entire body is made of smooth-to-touch metal. There are no sharp corners, all faces are smoothed.

Despite the metal, the total weight of the device slightly exceeds 1.3 kg. For this part of the Swift 1, it is quite possible to indulge with the MacBook Air 13 β€³, and the screen is even slightly larger.

On the left side there is a small round connector for charging, an external HDMI output, a USB 3.1 Type C connector (without battery charging) and two USB 3.0 ports, one of which supports charging mobile devices off.

On the right is a slot for an SD / SDHC / SDXC card reader, a combined 3.5 mm headset output, a USB 2.0 port, a point indicator of system activity (blue / red), and another power indicator. On the edge of the right is the Kensington lock slot. In general, all external ports are quite comfortable and ergonomic in use, although the audio output would look better to me from the left side.

There are no ports on the front edge. In the center there is a small plastic protrusion from the frame of the screen, which makes it easier to lift the lid of the laptop. The Swift 1 does not pass the Macbook test, its hinge is a little more tight, so it will not work to lift the lid with one hand without supporting the bottom of the device.

Behind us, too, is empty. The only thing that the body of the hinge, though painted in a single color with everything else, is not really metal, but plastic. However, this can only be determined by touch, visually the material looks like metal.

The top cover is flat and even, one embossed element on it – Acer silver logo. The thickness of the cover in profile, in combination with a metal panel and a plastic border of the display, is 5 mm.

The bottom panel has a rounded shape in the front. Four rubber feet are pasted on the corners. There are no vents because the laptop has a passive cooling system. Near the front legs on the sides are the speaker grilles. Near the right rear there is an inconspicuous hole in which the battery reset button is hidden, in case of a complete system hang. Serial number stickers are centered on the back. Nine service screws manufacturer did not try to disguise.

It’s time to open the laptop. As mentioned above, this will require two hands – if the hinge were a little less tight, you could just pull the cover up. The difference in comparison with the previous iterations of this model in the form of very emaciated side frames immediately catches the eye. Now their thickness at the sides is 6.3 mm, which made it possible to insert a 14 β€³ screen into the case, where only 13.3 β€³ had previously been placed.

The screen cover is frosted, the glare on it is certainly visible, but rather weak. On the top, thin frame in the center is placed the eye of the webcam, a green indicator of its activity and two microphones. Two additional microphones, which are used for the correct operation of the voice assistant at a distance of up to 4 meters, are shifted to the right upper part of the frame. On the lower wide side, the Acer logo is placed in the center, and even lower, on the body of the hinge, is the Swift inscription.

A notable feature of Acer Swift 1 is the ability to expand almost 180 degrees. It is difficult for me to come up with real scenarios of application for this.

But, on the other hand, the chances of breaking the screen mounts are greatly reduced, pushing it further than the usual 45 degrees from the vertical. Yes, and work in the prone position will sometimes be more convenient.

Keyboard and touchpad

Keystrokes are clear, short and tactilely distinguishable at the time of actuation. The digital block is absent, but if necessary its functions can be connected to the numbers β€œ7”, β€œ8”, β€œ9” and the letters β€œUIOJKLM”. The system launch button is in the upper right corner. I note that it was done thoughtfully: when pressed in the off state, it starts the system. And when the system is running, you need to hold it for a few seconds, after which a dialog appears on the screen prompting you to choose to turn off the display, sleep, hibernate or power off. There is an option and shutdown without the appearance of a dialogue, for this you should select the appropriate menu item. All this helps to avoid accidentally shutting down the PC by accidentally pressing Power instead of Backspace during operation. The keyboard unit, as in principle, and the entire top panel, when pressed hard, can sag.

Thin white font reads well in daylight. To work in the dark, there is a white LED backlight with one fixed brightness level that illuminates the symbols and the circuit of the switches. It turns on and off with the F8 key. If you do not touch the keyboard, the backlight automatically turns off after 30 seconds of inactivity and lights up again when you press any key.

The touchpad is plastic, slippery, slightly recessed into the metal case. Its dimensions are 105×77 mm. It supports standard Windows gestures, such as scrolling, increasing and decreasing the size of windows and up to four simultaneous finger touches to perform different functions.

Recently, even inexpensive laptops can please a good picture. The resolution of 1920 Γ— 1080 pixels (157 ppi) is located on the 14-inch matrix. It is quite enough for daily use. Lovers of very thin frames will not impress, although on the sides they are still really small. Touch screens in this model is not provided.

A nice picture provides a good IPS-matrix. Calibration, of course, misses the ideal, going to the β€œwarm” side. But this laptop as a whole is not designed for photo processing or drawing, so this is unlikely to become a problem, and calibration flaws will be noticeable only by direct comparison with more customized screens.

Illumination is not very much and it may not be enough, for example, on the street. But in the room it is enough, and the matte surface practically does not leave room for glare. I doubt that ordinary users will have any complaints about such a screen if the computer is used in a room where direct sunlight will not fall on it.

Our modification is equipped with a quad-core Intel Pentium N5000 processor with Intel HD Graphics 605 video. 8 GB of RAM is fixed and 256 is permanent. 5.0. On more for such a laptop can not count.

Computers with similar performance metrics are called typewriters. There is some truth in this, because for demanding tasks and games this is really not enough. But enough for the browser, mail, office, instant messengers and multimedia, but only if you do not overload the laptop with a large number of similar tasks. It is important to remember that younger versions of the model with 4 GB of RAM will be less comfortable to use.

Passive cooling works for user comfort. During operation, the case is warm, and the temperature of the CPU can be kept around 50 degrees. Noise, of course, not at all. And this is just great for those who like to work in silence. For all the time with a laptop, I have never felt the excess heating under my hands.

Battery life

To test the autonomy of the laptop, the PCMark8 test was used, imitating the standard office load, and at the maximum screen brightness. In this mode, the system was able to stretch almost six and a half hours of pure time. In practice, this means that Acer Swift 1 will be enough for one full and very intensive working day. It requires less than two hours to fully charge from the mains.

Our verdict

Compared with the previous model, the changes are not so much, and they are all visual. Performance as it was not enough, it remains, although the bonuses in the configuration still appeared. At the same time, the price has practically not changed. But for those users who first of all want a comfortable, quiet and pleasant laptop for unpretentious tasks, Swift 1 should fit perfectly.
