Presentation of Huawei Mate 10 (Pro) with my own eyes

The first information about the smartphone Huawei Mate 10 began appearing last month, long before the world premiere it became known that the key feature of the novelty will be artificial intelligence (AI or English version of AI) and a new processor Huawei Kirin 970, presented for the first time at the IFA 2017. The Mate smartphone line has been the second flagship for more than a massive P-series. In what respect, Huawei’s strategy repeats in this respect the strategy of Samsung, which represents two flagships – with an index S in the spring and a smartphone of the Note series with a large screen and a stylus in the fall. In Huawei Mate smartphones, the emphasis has always been on performance and increased battery life. If the smartphones of the Huawei P-series are characterized by advanced features and good design, the Mate customers are “heavy” users who work a lot with the smartphone during the day and their productivity and autonomy are more important than the appearance. At the same time, we can not say that these smartphones are bad with the design, since last year and the Mate 9 model there is generally very good (including the version, the design of which, like this year, was developed by Porsche). In the same year it was Mate 10 that was lucky to get the newest processor, the capabilities of which closely overlap with where Android moves. So, what do we need to know about the new Huawei Mate 10 (Pro)? And how fair is it to call it the first smartphone with artificial intelligence?

Why did they take up artificial intelligence

I can be mistaken, but the situation with my bell tower looks like this: at the conference for Google I / O developers in May this year it was announced about the transition from the concept of Mobile First (mobility first of all) to the AI First concept (artificial intelligence first of all). Huawei quickly decided to reorient to this idea and “lead” the promising direction. As a result, in September, in the announcement of the Kirin 970 processor, information appears on artificial intelligence and the NPU (Neural Network Processor) module, complementing the already existing CPU (CPU), GPU (graphics processing unit) and DSP (sound processor). And in October we see the first smartphone with this processor, which also hurries to stake out the topic of artificial intelligence, but for now these features are declarative in nature than something really tangible and real. And on the image of the processor in the video appears the inscription Hi AI (hello, artificial intelligence), which was not in September yet.

Which solutions were first used in Huawei Mate 10

The processor: the world’s first processor with an NPU and the world’s first processor with a 12-core Mali-G72 GPU.

The world’s first smartphone, the quick charge system of which received a TÜV SÜD security certificate. And it does not matter that you’ve never heard of this company, and its office is in Munich. From the song of words can not be thrown out. Although the question how to do 600 cycles of total discharge of such a smartphone (taking into account its working time) remains open.

Than Huawei Mate 10 is better than competitors

At this point, Huawei did not hesitate to drive around its favorite competitors – Samsung and Apple. Not all arguments can be taken seriously, but at least some of them are undeniable. For example, in the ratio of the area of the front panel to the useful area of the display, the struggle is already for hundredths of a percent, which looks ridiculous.

We went through the new function of the iPhone X – unlocking the look, hinting that unlocking the fingerprint works faster than 3 actions. This corresponds to the truth, Mate 10 is really very quickly unlocked, and right from the state of the screen off.

This slide caused laughter in the hall, though, for the sake of justice, was first to take the liberty of putting the control key of the smartphone on the back panel of LG in its G2 model. In addition, this design does not guarantee that the user will never touch the camera lens.

But nothing to do with this to fans of Apple – the brightness of the display Huawei Mate 10 above – 730 nits against 625.

And, conversely, – the argument with a higher battery capacity does not say much about the real user experience.

What makes Huawei Mate 10 different from Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design

The most important thing you need to know about the differences between these three models: Mate 10 has a higher screen resolution (2560×1440 pixels versus 2160×1080 for its older counterparts). This is the only thing in which he surpasses the neighbors in the line. Otherwise, it is technically simpler: the diagonal is 5.9 inches instead of 6.0, the usual LCD instead of OLED, the weight is 186 grams against 178, and the protection is IP53 class instead of IP67 in older models. Visually, the Mate 10 Porsche Design differs from the Mate 10 Pro with its black body color, expressive insertion and memory – 256 gigabytes versus 128. In both cases, 6 GB of RAM is installed. And the Mate 10 uses 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. The Porsche Design feels exactly the same, there are fingerprints on the rear panel, but the power and volume keys have a noticeable tactile difference: they look metallic with a corrugated surface.

What are the color options for Huawei Mate 10?

Huawei Mate 10: Mocha Brown / Black / Champagne Gold / Pink Gold (brown, black, golden, pink)
Huawei Mate 10 Pro: Midnight Blue / Titanium Gray / Mocha Brown / Pink Gold (blue, gray, brown, pink)
Huawei Mate 10 Porsche Design: Diamond Black (Black)
What’s in the box of Huawei Mate 10

The Huawei SuperCharge charger, capable of delivering current up to 5 amps
USB-C cable
Wired headphones with a USB-C connector (the smartphone does not have a standard 3.5 mm output)
Silicone Case
a SIM card tray extractor
How much will it cost for Huawei Mate 10

So far, only prices for Europe are known.

Huawei Mate 10: 700 euros
Huawei Mate 10 Pro: 800 euros
Huawei Mate 10 Porsche Design: 1395 euros
It’s worth saying that the prices look quite moderate, and the objectively high price for Mate 10 Porsche Design is due to the specificity of the “genre”: there will still be few buyers of such a smartphone, and those that will be completely insensitive to the price.

What accessories will be available for Huawei Mate 10

Together with the new smartphones introduced and several accessories. The most unexpected of these was the 360-degree EnVizion 360 camera, connected via a USB-C connector. It will be available in 5 colors, but the cameras at the presentation were in the form of models and their work was impossible to see. As well as understand – will they be compatible with other smartphones. And the most useful accessory was an external SuperCharge battery with 4.5V / 5A charging current. still showed two additional versions of cases – simple and with a cover partially overlapping the display of the smartphone and transferring it to a special mode of displaying data in sleep mode. For some reason, they also showed a clever floor scales, which are currently not released in China.

What else can Huawei Mate 10 know?

When connected to a monitor or TV (you need a USB-C -> HDMI adapter or a special docking station, or you have a monitor with a USB-C input), the smartphone goes into computer mode on Android. In fact, this is what Microsoft wanted to do with Windows-smartphones in the Continuum function, but successfully buried it along with the Windows Phone operating system and smartphones on it. A similar function is in Samsung, along with the corresponding accessory called Samsung Dex. How much all this will be convenient (when connected to the monitor, the smartphone will be able to play the role of a touchpad and keyboard), still it will be necessary to check in practice.

What are the functions of artificial intelligence Huawei Mate 10

Here we go back to where we started: for now, artificial intelligence in a smartphone is more a declaration of opportunities to which the Huawei Mate 10 is already ready. In practice, for the time being, he can recognize (here you and computer vision, and machine learning, and neural networks in one bottle with artificial intelligence) 13 objects and scenes. And it does it all successfully (and fairly quickly, and without any special modes) without an Internet connection. That is, if food, flowers or sunset falls into the camera lens, then the corresponding icon appears on the screen. Well, and the camera selects a suitable shooting mode. Although, for example, it is difficult for me to understand what the shooting of a dog from shooting a cat differs from the point of view of photography and exposure. Here the shooting of snow or a beach near the water, of course, has its own characteristics. As well as night shooting or shooting portraits. But it’s just funny now to check artificial intelligence food. If AI does not recognize the object as something edible, this, in theory, should be alarming.

I had the opportunity after the presentation to talk separately about the development of artificial intelligence with Tom Chen, a marketing expert at Huawei Consumer Business Group. He said that the topic of artificial intelligence is “hot” this year and will be relevant in the next few years. Up to the point that artificial intelligence can be called the next Big Idea, which can bring smartphones to a new level (although, in my opinion, virtual reality looks like such an idea so far). First of all, the development of artificial intelligence will affect the recognition of images and speech. And all this will work without the need to connect to the Internet. According to Tom Chen, in order to train the Kirin 970 processor to recognize images, hundreds of millions of photos were analyzed. And the result was then transferred in some form to the processor. In the future, thanks to the NPU, the processor will be able to continue learning, including using the data of the smartphone user. As a simple example of how similar technologies work, Tom Chen compared the use of two applications by the owner of a smartphone: Facebook and Instagram. Analyzing the time spent by the smartphone user for each application, the processor will be able to determine which of them is more important and priority for the user. And will accordingly change the use of processor resources in the standby mode, which will increase the overall energy efficiency of the smartphone. From the user’s point of view, the smartphone will continue to work longer, despite the applications hanging in the memory and running in the background, because the system will suspend the work of the unused application on time. On the question of who owns the authorship of using AI in smartphones – developers of Huawei or Google’s developers, Tom Chen said that this is a mutual rapprochement – the operating system and the processor that have been given the opportunity to work with the API of artificial intelligence. In addition to the Google API known as TensorFlow, Huawei also uses the Microsoft API to work with AI, and will also develop its own API, which will create an ecosystem of applications with artificial intelligence thanks to third-party developers.

In general, just when all these as yet non-existent applications appear, Huawei Mate 10 will rightly be named not a smartphone, but an intelligent machine, as it sounds in the commercial. Although he still went down in history as the first smartphone supporting the capabilities of artificial intelligence. True, it is difficult to imagine how many more steps will have to be taken and how many years to spend while artificial intelligence will not enter our life. But there is always a chance that everything will happen faster than all of us think.

Finally, here’s a gallery of pictures, which will allow you to assess the atmosphere of the presentation and the quality of the images of the Huawei Mate 10 camera – all these photos are shot on it.
