One of the latest innovations at the International Mobile Congress in Barcelona was presented by ASUS, and managed to surprise the audience. The manufacturer showed the fifth generation of the flagship line ZenFone, and if the usual ZenFone 5 and simplified ZenFone 5 Lite was known even before the announcement, the advanced ZenFone 5Z was a real surprise.
ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z are externally completely identical. They got an extended 6.2-inch display with Full HD + resolution, a 19: 9 aspect ratio and thin frames. They also have a trendy cutout in the upper part of the screen under the front camera and a talking speaker.
It is interesting that ASUS was the first among the manufacturers of Android-smartphones to realize the function of auto-adjusting the color temperature of the display depending on the environment. In most other devices, this mode only makes the picture on the screen “warm” up to the set value in case of a lack of lighting or according to the schedule. As a result, the eyes should be much less tired when using ZenFone 5, but this option we have to test in practice.
On the reverse side, smartphones have a glass cover with a proprietary centric design. If you turn the smartphone in your hand, you can see how the rays of light leave the round scanner of prints. In the upper right corner there is a double main camera and LED flash.
In ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z, the main camera is represented by a 12 megapixel sensor Sony IMX363 with a pixel size of 1.4 microns and a lens with a f / 1.8 aperture and an optional module with a viewing angle of 120 degrees. There is an optical image stabilization system. ASUS announces the use of artificial intelligence technologies to identify scenes in order to obtain images with optimal settings. At the moment, smartphones recognize 16 different shooting scenarios, including text, cat, dog, sunset, food, people, flowers, plants, the ocean, snow and others. Not without the fashionable now animated emoticons, called ZenMoji.
ZenFone 5 Lite (in some markets will be known as ZenFone 5Q) received a 6-inch display with a resolution of Full HD + and an aspect ratio of 18: 9. He does not have any cut-out in the screen, but there are very noticeable frames from the top and bottom.
On the reverse side, ZenFone 5 Lite, like the older models, is covered with glass. He also has a fingerprint scanner and a dual camera. The latter consists of a 16-megapixel sensor with a lens with a f / 2.2 f / 2.2, and the second module is the same as in a conventional ZenFone 5. It’s interesting that the Lite version also received a dual front camera, which is not in ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z.
All three smartphones come with Android OS Oreo and a proprietary user interface ZenUI 5.0. On assurances of ASUS, the fifth version of ZenUI is the most “clean” of all that the company released. The manufacturer got rid of many of its own applications, replacing them with Google services. The only pre-installed third-party programs are Facebook and Instagram. Also, all new items support the unlock function by scanning the face.
Regarding the cost and availability, ASUS said that ZenFone 5 will go on sale in April, and ZenFone 5Z should be waiting in June for a price of € 479. Thus, ZenFone 5Z is currently the most affordable flagship with the new Snapdragon 845 processor.

Another innovation was the updated ASUS ZenFone Max (M1). It looks almost the same as last year’s model, but has become somewhat more compact. The device is equipped with a 5.5-inch IPS-display with a resolution of 1440×720 pixels (18: 9), a Snapdragon 425 or Snapdragon 430 processor depending on the version, up to 3 GB of RAM and a drive up to 32 GB with expandability.
On the back of the ZenFone Max (M1) are a fingerprint scanner and a dual main camera. The latter is represented by a 13-megapixel module with a f / 2.0 aperture and an 8-megapixel sensor with a lens with a viewing angle of 120 °. In front there is one 8 Mp camera with aperture f / 2.2.
The smartphone supports work with two SIM-cards and has a battery capacity of 4000 mAh. Like the ZenFone 5 line, it comes with Android 8.0 Oreo and ZenUI 5.0 user interface.
