First look at ASUS ZenFone 5: improvements for the benefit

The smartphone ASUS ZenFone 5 became one of the central premieres of the exhibition MWC 2018. In many respects, this attention was caused by its bright and spectacular design, although some it seems ambiguous. But one impressive appearance is not limited to: the novelties of the Taiwanese manufacturer can boast of the latest chips from Qualcomm and the developed photo part. The smartphone recently went on sale, and we already had the opportunity to briefly get acquainted with the new ZenFone 5.

Of greatest interest was, of course, the design of the novelty. Is it really so reminiscent of a competitor from Apple, how can it seem from advertising renders and photos, or is it really different?

As usually happens, the truth was somewhere in the middle. From some angles of ASUS ZenFone 5, certainly, it is similar to the sensational iPhone X, especially until you take the smartphone in your hands. Glass surfaces, characteristic “ears” on top of the screen, smooth shapes – all this causes certain associations. With a closer acquaintance, the differences became noticeable. For example, the very “bang” takes a much smaller area – only about one-third of the width of the display. Positive impressions have remained on the quality of the screen. The device uses an IPS-matrix with a resolution of 2246×1080 pixels and a ratio of 19: 9. The picture is very juicy, it can even compete with the fact that AMOLED-matrices are produced. Of course, there is not the slightest hint of graininess or other image defects.

The back looks nice. At first it seems that it is a mirror, but in practice the substrate under the glass has a complex structure that distorts the reflection and plays beautifully in the light. One misfortune – with prints and divorces it was covered literally in half a minute. It seems that the soft napkin will become a mandatory accessory for the owners of this smartphone. In addition to the vertically located camera, there is also a fingerprint scanner on the “back”. In a short time, there were no comments on him. It works smartly and accurately, and in the settings there is an opportunity to expand the basic functionality at the expense of gestures.

The remaining elements are located in the usual places, but some features have attracted attention. For example, we counted as many as three microphones, which promises a high-quality operation of the noise cancellation system. And the owners of wired headphones are sure to be glad that the developers did not remove the 3.5-millimeter audio jack.

In the hand of ASUS ZenFone 5 is not bad. Like all “glass” models, it is slippery enough, therefore under certain circumstances it is quite capable of jumping out of hands. The situation is saved by the successful shape of the metal frame and the small width of the device itself.

ASUS ZenFone 5 runs on Android 8 Oreo OS, on top of which the proprietary ZenUI 5 shell is installed. The latter is noticeably different from the previous version. It has become less overloaded and generally more simple. Disappeared too large and bright switches in the panel of quick settings, they gave way to neat and concise icons. And this work specialists from ASUS conducted everywhere. Pleased with the lack of a large number of preinstalled applications.

The shell itself works quickly – apparently, the optimization has also been given due attention. Yes, and performance for smooth operation should suffice in excess: a bright body hides inside the combination of Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 and 4 GB of RAM. The general logic of the interface complies with Android standards. The application menu was not removed: it, like in the latest versions of the “clean” OS from Google, opens with swipe from the bottom of the screen. Noticeably expanded the list of settings. For example, a whole subsection is assigned to various ASUS proprietary functions. More about them, we’ll talk about in the next article. As a funny little thing stands the background of the lock window – it changes every time you turn on the display.

The rear camera consists of two modules. The main one has a resolution of 12 megapixels and a good aperture (f / 1.8). It is complemented by a 5-megapixel wide-angle sensor with an angle of 120 Β°. It is great for shooting buildings and other attractions. A standard application that does not stand out with some unexpected solutions, however, it only serves him well. After starting the camera there is no feeling of confusion – it takes a couple of minutes to familiarize yourself with the interface. All the main elements are on the main screen, the same place is placed and the switch is in manual mode. Advanced features and filters are available on additional screens. Switching between them is done with swipe. Fans of mobile photography are helped by an artificial intelligence system: thanks to it, the smartphone is able to recognize the type of scene caught in the lens, and adjust the shooting parameters accordingly. In detail, we’ll take a closer look at the quality of the images later in the extended review. While it can be said that the camera quickly and correctly focuses and chooses the exposure well. On the screen of the gadget, the photos taken look very decent. Below are some examples of shooting under different lighting conditions.

ASUS ZenFone 5 has everything you need for success. In his favor, the bright appearance, well-thought-out and prettier shell from previous versions, the advanced camera and the modern productive “stuffing” speak.
