We knew that Samsung would show a folding device on the Galaxy Unpacked, but we expected to see it closer to the end of the event. To the surprise of many, the company decided to start with the Galaxy Fold – the first smartphone manufacturer that opens a new line of Samsung smartphones.
Like the prototype we first saw in November last year at the SDC 2018 developer conference, the Galaxy Fold, when folded, is a smartphone in our usual form factor, equipped with a 4.6-inch display with a resolution of 1960 × 840 pixels.
Inside, there is a 7.3 inch Infinity Flex display with a resolution of 2152 × 1536 pixels, which allows you to turn it into a small tablet, just opening the device like a book. Both screens have the same density – 420 dpi.
In the folded state, the thickness of the device is 17 mm, in the open form – 6.9 mm. This is even less than the new flagship. For the Galaxy Fold, a special hinge system was created with several locking mechanisms hidden in the back of the device. Galaxy Fold is equipped with a Snapdragon 855 processor and 12 GB of RAM. As the drive uses 512 GB of flash memory standard UFS 3.0, which is twice as fast as UFS 2.1. The smartphone works from two batteries with a total capacity of 4380 mAh.
Galaxy Fold is equipped with six cameras from three sides – in front and behind when folded and from the inside when open. The main camera system consists of a 16-megapixel module with a wide-angle lens with a f / 2.2 aperture, a 12-megapixel module with a telephoto lens with a f / 2.4 aperture and optical stabilization and a 12-megapixel camera with a variable aperture of f / 1.5 – f / 2.4. On the internal screen there is a double selfie-camera with resolutions of 10 and 8 megapixels. When folded, a 10-megapixel front camera with f / 2.2 aperture remains available.
Now the fun part is how does the Galaxy Fold work? The device uses a system of continuous operation of applications when switching between tablet and smartphone modes. Applications such as WhatsApp, Microsoft Office, YouTube and other major programs are optimized for display and these modes.
During the presentation, the work of Google Maps was demonstrated. The application was correctly displayed both on the external and on the internal screens, although, one has to admit, it did not start the first time. There was also a slight distortion of the image at the bend.
Galaxy Fold supports multitasking mode, in which you can run up to three applications simultaneously. At the same time, it seems that you can’t drag them around the screen, the running programs are clearly fixed in their places.
Galaxy Fold goes on sale April 26. The smartphone will be available in versions of LTE and 5G. Its cost starts at $ 1,980. Expensive, but such is the price for innovation.
