Review of MIUI 10

MIUI 10 is the tenth generation of firmware from Xiaomi, based on the mobile operating system Android. In MIUI 10, developers focused on improving performance, as well as introducing on the level of the whole system the functions of artificial intelligence and machine learning. About this, as well as other innovations that are waiting for users in MIUI 10, read in our review.

Visual changes

Review of MIUI 10-1
The operating system MIUI 10 has changed quite significantly, in comparison with previous versions, in the visual plan. It removed all the elements that could disrupt the sense of integrity when using frameless devices. Disappeared contradictory colors and heap of elements, and all the most important is now presented in the form of neat cards with rounded corners, which visually fit under the rounded corners of the screens.

In MIUI 10 designers decided not to stop at changing individual elements of the interface and “refreshed” the entire system. The applications “Weather”, “Notes”, “Calendar”, as well as the lock screen were redrawn. All these applications have become convenient to use on smartphones equipped with screens with an aspect ratio of 18: 9.
Review of MIUI 10-11
Significant changes have occurred in the multitasking panel. In older versions of MIUI, iOS and in the “clean” Android cards were located horizontally, which allowed you to view only one card at a time. To use the entire screen space, designers rethought the multitasking panel. Inspired by the standard application of notes from MIUI, a new way of managing active applications was invented. Now the tabs of open applications are displayed in the form of a vertical list, which is very convenient for elongated screens. This kind of maximizes the workspace. In order to unload an application from memory, you just need to swipe it aside, and in order to fix the application or show other settings, you need to press and hold it.

In MIUI 10, the position of the volume slider has also changed. Now it appears from the side, and not from above, as before. This way of controlling the volume should be particularly in demand on smartphones with a large screen diagonal, since they stretch their finger to the top of the screen 18: 9 – not the most convenient solution.

Changes in gesture management

Review of MIUI 10-2
In 2018, most manufacturers began to bet on frameless smartphones, and Xiaomi decided to keep up with them. The MIUI team thought about how to use frameless displays in full. It was a difficult task, which was solved step by step. At first it was decided to abandon the standard hardware keys and go to the onscreen, but this solution did not allow using the entire screen, because its lower part has always been closed by control buttons. In connection with this, the next step was the transition to the management of gestures.

Each key has been replaced by a separate gesture. This freed up the space on the screen, and management became even more convenient. Since the launch of smart gestures on MIUI 9, Xiaomi has received thousands of positive feedback from users who read something like this: “if you switch to gestures, you can not go back to the buttons”. In MIUI 10, the gesture animation speed was significantly increased, and a new gesture was added to switch between the two latest applications.

Speed and optimization of the system

Creating the operating system MIUI 10, Xiaomi made a huge bet on improving its performance. The developers implemented two new algorithms called Lock-free critical path and Codependent prioritizing, which increased the overall responsiveness of the MIUI 10 interface by 10%. In addition to the two major algorithms, MIUI 10 has 14 minor system optimizations, but how fast has MIUI 10 actually become? Below is the video, which in turn starts 5 system and 25 popular applications on Redmi Note 5 Pro and Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo. As a result of testing, Redmi Note 5 Pro with MIUI 10 surpassed its competitor with a good margin. MIUI 10 managed to open 3 times more applications in a visual test of performance.

Portrait pictures on any smartphone

For shooting in portrait mode, you need a mirror camera or a smartphone with two cameras. The second module in the smartphone is needed to collect information about the depth and other details. Last year, there was a tendency to create software that would make portrait shots using only one camera module. The first company that managed this task was Google with Pixel devices. These smartphones make good portrait shots with one camera.
Review of MIUI 10-3
Xiaomi has long been equipping its smartphones with two camera modules, but MIUI 10 will allow you to take portrait photos even on smartphones with one camera. The company claims that it has trained its algorithms on more than 100,000 photos, so it is not worth doubting.

New sounds

The MIUI team has a large library of nature sounds that will be added to MIUI 10. If you are tired after a hard day, let the surrounding sounds relax your body and mind. The timer has been added the ability to launch one of the sounds of nature: beach, forest, rain and much more. It will help to relax, fall asleep or meditate.
Review of MIUI 10-4
The sounds of notifications in MIUI 10 will also sound more natural, they will fall on your smartphone like drops of water. Each new notification you receive will sound unique. If you receive several notifications one after another, they form a clear rhythmic melody.
